Chapter Fourteen: Noah

The bloodline vampire with a thick Russian accent insists that I sit by him among the champions who now sit on the opposite side of the underground stadium from their sponsors. The vampire who now has stumps for hands has not yet emerged from wherever he was led after he yielded.

Neither has the twin belonging to Lord Kang, Minji, whose sister was brutally beheaded by Tiki.

She met her second death, one of the champions muttered to another. She lived forty vampire years, turned at just seventeen.

An impressive lifespan for her kind.

If Tiki feels any remorse for the death blow he delivered, it doesn’t show on his face. Maybe he was just doing what Lord Blackwood ordered him to do.

Either way, I decide to keep my distance.

When Monique enters the ring, she offers Ronan a feral grin as he descends opposite her.

Ihar chuckles darkly beside me.

“We sent a spy to the Fées some time ago. Perhaps a decade or so,” he tells me, leaning in conspiratorially as if we’re old friends. He is a massive, hulking vampire that oozes ancient power. I took one look at him in the pit and knew it was in my best interest to yield—that to yield against him while pretending to be human was the wise thing to do. “Just routine things, you know.”

I didn’t know, but I nod anyway, keeping my eyes trained on the pit.

“They say that redheaded one is neither human nor vampire. They say that, when she was turned, she became something else,” Ihar continues.

That’s enough to make me tear my eyes away from Monique as the bell chimes and the fight begins. Only briefly, though.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

Ihar shrugs. “She fights like she was born for it. Kills as though death feeds her better than blood—better than life.”

Poetic… and creepy.

“Oh,” is all I manage in response.

The vampire chuckles again. “We shall see for ourselves now, I suppose.”

Ronan, Monique’s opponent, is tall and spindly like a walking skeleton. And yet, from what I could tell of his first fight against the Moretti champion, he is graceful and reasonably skilled.

I watch Monique size him up. She looks less like a warrior calculating the best strategy for victory and more like a feral animal trying to decide on the most entertaining way of ripping apart her prey.

I kissed that feral animal.

Stranger yet, I don’t think I would mind kissing her again.

While Ronan lowers into a defensive stance, Monique keeps her body loose and casual, as if she’s simply here to meet him for tea.

I expect her to make the first move, like she did with me, but she simply waits. She even has the audacity to glance down at her nails, frowning softly as if she’s considering whether she’s due for a fresh manicure. I almost laugh.

“I can’t tell if her arrogance is an act,” muses Ihar. “She’s hard to read.”

Tiki scoots over and cuts in. “She’d be smart not to underestimate us. Lord Blackwood trains us well, and he himself was trained by the legendary Gavin Blackwood.
